The ancient Egyptians are one of the best known of the world's ancient civilizations and are learnt about by lots of school children all over the world. They thought of Egypt as having two half, a red and a black side and each of these sides provided different things. The black side was the area next to the Nile where they could grow crops and provide food for the communities and the red side was the desert. This provided riches such as metal and precious stones and provided protection from attack. The Egyptians worshipped many gods and each god had a different meaning. Some were local to a town or village and others may be a animal God or God of death for example. They were led by a Pharaoh who was ruler and representative of the gods on earth.
The ancient Greeks can be categorised into three different eras. Originally they mainly travelled as there were so many of them and did not settle too long in one place. They lived next to rivers and out in open land and raised animals such as sheep and goats to provide them with food and other materials. Over time the introduction of metal saw the first hint towards a class system in Greece and people would be buried with metal as this was an indication of their wealth.
Ancient China began at around the time of the Stone Age and initially people lived very simply, hunting and gathering to survive and dressing in fur and leather from the animals that they caught. However, gradually they to took a turn towards farming and using animals to provide them with the necessities to survive. They came to use metals and wear jewellery like other civilizations.
The Incas are the ancient civilization of the Americas. They had a mighty army and inhabited a large part of the Americas including areas of Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. They were fantastic builders and this is highlighted by the lost city of Machu Picchu, which is still widely visited by people all over the world today.
