Ancient China

The first people seemed to have reached China at about the time of the Stone Age that is at around 50,000 BC. This was around the time of the first known people in Europe. These people had to hunt in order to survive and gather other items such as various plant life and herbs. They were clothed in either fur from the animals they hunted for meat or in leather (also from the same source!). They made simple tools and implements out of either stone or bones from animals and used fire as a primary tool for cooking and warmth.

After this, at around 4000 BC changes were underway for China and things took a decidedly more civilised turn. People began to take to farming and kept animals such as sheep or chickens. It has been found the people in western Asia had actually started farming over two thousand years before this and we still do not know if china learned of this and started farming themselves, or whether they do discovered it independently. Soon after this society developed further and people started to live in communities of little villages and make pottery such as cups and tools to aid their daily lives.

The next significant development in Ancient China was the Shang Dynasty. These people lived at 2000 BC and learned how to make Bronze using tin or copper. They also developed a writing language. Like other cultures at this time it was based around pictures which were meant to depict a sound or simply an idea. The first horse drawn chariot of the time started at around this time and the people wore jewellery that featured mainly green stones (Jade).

Eventually the Shang Dynasty were overrun by the Zhou Dynasty and these people originated from the area of the Yellow River. The Zhou Dynasty had a much more intensive use of agriculture than the Shang Dynasty before them and farming lands would usually be owned by noble families.
